My School: Elementary Schools

Overview

Student ArtworkThe heart of the LASF K-5 programs is the Instructional Program. Highly skilled and professional instructors provide a variety of enrichment programs to the students. Every classroom at a particular grade level is offered an identical choice of LASF classes.

All Kindergarten classes receive 10 art classes, while all classrooms in first through fifth grade receive 17 art classes. A wide variety of LASF science units are taught to the K-5 students, beginning with a unit on the five senses for kindergartners and culminating with the physiology unit in fifth grade. LASF also provides an assortment of social studies/humanities enrichment classes, including a Child's Historical Perspective of Lafayette for third grade students and the California Poet in the Schools program for fourth grade classrooms.

LASF provides various highlights to each school during the year. LASF volunteers coordinate and run the science and art fairs that are held annually at each school. LASF provides monies for the cost of producing the fairs, as well. Each school has a discretionary budget to use on site for specific projects, such as the student-created tile wall at the new Springhill School and the student murals that brighten the Lafayette Elementary School campus.

LASF will once again be funding the California Symphony in the Schools program, with each school receiving this program every third year. Groups of California Symphony musicians come to the schools and introduce the students to the wood, brass, strings, and percussion instruments. LASF works closely with the Lafayette School District in helping to make possible, or to enhance, certain programs. LASF and the School District share the cost of the K-5 vocal music program. By partnering, it is possible to provide each elementary school with a vocal music program taught by credentialed music instructors. LASF provides funding for aides for the fourth and fifth grade instrumental music program. The aides help the instrumental music teacher by offering smaller group instruction for specific instrument groups.

In addition, LASF supports a district-wide, K-8 technology training program. This program, which provides training to teachers on how to integrate available technology into the classroom, is made possible by a partnership with LASF and the Lafayette School District.
