About LASF: Grant ProgramSpring 2003 Grant Awards District: Bob Giannini, Lafayette School District Emergency Program Funding: Funding is extended for 1 year only to maintain current class size. Funding of one section of grade 8 English will maintain class-size and foster the writing component of the program. This will allow for a concentration on sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, etc. 2. Lady Bugs to Owls - $6,000 District: Bob Giannini, Lafayette School District Emergency Program Funding: This grant supplies needed consumable science materials such as owl pellets, ladybugs, peat cups, larva, etc. to the four elementary school science labs. Funding was cut for these supplies and without them, the lab teachers would not be able to complete their planned lessons. 3. Pilot of the Right Start Math Program - $708 Teacher: Cheri Facer, Happy Valley School, 1st grade Use of the abacus as a math manipulative will help 1st grade students learn basic math concepts. Along with other hands-on materials, the abacus program would provide extensions and enrichments to the 1st grade math curriculum. In addition, the program will provide instructional opportunities to work with quantities up to 1000, learn strategies for adding, add 4-digits numbers, and visual quantities and operations. 4. Math Technology Center - $500 Teacher: Eileen Fader, Springhill School, 2nd grade teacher The math project supplies software for 2nd grade students. This will allow for the establishment of math technology centers to allow more math related learning an practice time. 5. Access for all – An Intervention Network - $3,275 Teacher: Jeannine Pitney, Springhill School, Reading Specialist Funding for materials that will be used in grades 1-5. The program will be networked and widely used. It will enable students access to two highly successful reading programs. “Read Naturally” and Lexia Learning materials. 6. Literature Circle Books - $3,658 Teacher: Jennifer Sutherland, Stanley Middle School, 7th grade Core Emergency Program Funding: Funding for literature book selections to replace old and damaged books. These will be used in Literature circles for discussions and assignments. 7. The River Project - $4,622 Teacher: Michael Meneghetti, Stanley Middle School, 6th grade Science Provides equipment for the study of erosion for 6th grade geology unit. The tables will allow teachers for effectively and realistically teach erosion, river formation and sedimentation in a hands-on. 8. Alternative Learning Community - $1,275 Teacher: Fred Brill, Stanley Middle School, Principal Special request for funding of team building session for students and staff for recently created program for an alternate learning environment. Mr. Brill believes that this will help the selected students before they are sent to high school. 9. Palm Pilots - $664 Teacher: Ann Rassmussen, Acalanes High School, Foreign Language Funding for LAN and cart complements grant from County Technology Academy of $12,000 for palm pilots to help the study of languages. The use of the palm pilots and the accessories will help students to develop their reading and comprehension in the studied language. |
