Spring 2002 Grant Awards

../funding/Adding%20Machine1. Big Bands - $10,150

Teacher: Rick Meyers, Acalanes Instrumental Music

Designed to improve the Big Band Jazz program at Acalanes, this program utilizes a Music Aide and computer and video equipment. The equipment can also be used for the instruction of other forms of music.

2. Refocusing World History - $1,925

Teacher: Ramsey Thomas & Staff, Acalanes High School, Social Studies Department

A series of video tapes and materials will expand the 9th grade World History curriculum and the study of China, India, Latin America, and Islam.

3. Microrouter - $6,457

Teachers: Chris Stevens, Woodshop Stanley and Margaret Race, Parent

The purchase of a computerized microrouter will allow students to use computer-aided design by carving 3 dimensional designs in wood and other materials. Students will utilize both computer skills and math knowledge while creating interesting and innovative projects.

4. Advanced Video Production - $6,450

Teachers: Mike Merrick & Kris Rasmussen, Video Production Teachers Stanley Middle School

Video equipment was awarded for improved production and quality. This is a very popular elective and the new equipment is needed to serve the students and to improve the quality of their work. Students will gain an understanding of how the media can influence as well as the workings of live television broadcasting.

5. Multimedia Presentation Equipment - $6,000

Teacher: Jennifer Sutherland & Victoria Shegoian

Equipment purchased for use in promoting writing and presentation skills for English and Social Studies and maximize the use of computers in the classroom. Will allow teachers to more-clearly and effectively convey concepts simultaneously to all students.

6. Audio Books - $4,500

Teachers: Cari Rees, Reading Specialist & Barb Stevens, Librarian, Stanley Middle School

The acquisition of 90-100 audio books will help improve students’ understanding of literature. These audiobooks would be incorporated into the Stanley Library collection and available to all students.

7. Multimedia Digital Yearbook - $5,990

Teachers: Eric Meinbress, Burton Valley 4th grade

Equipment will be used to create a multimedia digital yearbook for fourth graders, representing various school activities. The camera will be made available to other teachers at BVE and will help students learn and understand technology and stimulate learning of language arts skills, i.e. speaking and listening skills.

8. Science Lab Garden - $3,225

Teachers: Adrienne Small, Science Lab Teacher, Happy Valley School

The creation of the garden will expand the hands-on science and include activities involving plants, insects, soil and microorganisms. All students will participate and gain knowledge in various fields of science while enhancing their skills as scientists. This garden is an extension of the science lab itself, so observation, testing, and research will be its major function.

9. Math Specialist Pilot Program - $16,196

Teacher: Bruce L. Wodhams, Springhill School

Allocation of dollars to fund year 2 of a two-year pilot program in Math. The goal of the program is to develop a math program at Springhill that implements to the fullest extent possible the differentiated instruction policy of the LSD.

10. Early Fluency - $265

Teachers: Springhill 1st grade staff

CD’s to be used in first grade reading and phonics will provide individual lessons and practice session in early writing, vocabulary, context clues, decoding of words, sound symbols, and phonics.

11. Writer’s Workshop - $6,099

Teachers: Kori Arens & Sue Anne Arens, Springhill 2nd and 4th grade teachers

Mobile units enable students to write, publish, improve organizational skills, use descriptive language and improve general writing skills. The ultimate goal is for students to write a successful piece that is “published.”

12. Accelerated Math - $4,496

Teachers: Springhill 4th grade staff

Software for the accelerated math program allows individualization in math instruction. More students will have opportunities to learn at his or her maximum potential. The program also decreases teacher paperwork, allowing more time with students

13. Colonial History Trunk - $533

Teacher: Nancy Newcomb, 5th grade teacher, Springhill

Creation of a colonial history trunk will allow students to gain a better understanding of this historical era.
