About LASF: Grant Program2004 - 2005 Grant Awards
District: Bob Giannini, Lafayette School District In order to maintain and enhance the existing Digital Arts program at Acalanes High School, this grant provides the memory upgrades and a new mouse for each of the 32 computers thus enabling the students to learn and practice high level technical and art design. 2. Just Between Us: Composing Musical Bridges - $3,034 Teacher: Bruce Lengacher, Acalanes High School Through this project, students will be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles and be introduced to non-traditional methods of arranging and performing these songs. The three parts of this project include composition and arranging of six songs by a professional composer, arranger and performer, two workshops, and a final concert and professional recording and production of a CD.
3. Jazz Ensemble Music - $1000 Teacher: Bob Athayde, Stanley Middle School, Instructional Music Teacher, Grades 6-8 This grant will provide the purchase of new sheet music. The sheet music will be a permanent part of the Stanley Music Department and will be utilized by many generations of Stanley musicians. 4. Accelerated Math--A Diagnostic Tool for Differentiating Instruction - $4,849 Teacher: Scott Westphal, Burton Valley Elementary, 5th Grade The purchase of the “Accelerated Math” software program enables its use as an effective tool in providing differentiated math instruction. Students and teachers receive immediate feedback on individualized assignments based on the student’s current achievement level. Skills not mastered are automatically reassigned and built into the next assignment. 5. LeapFrog - $4,133 Teacher: Christina Churchill, Springhill Elementary, 2nd Grade This grant purchases The LeapTrack® Assessment and Instruction System. Students will be able to learn and master reading/language arts and math through differentiated learning methods. 6. Handbuilding with Clay in First Grade - $788 Teacher: Laura Spain, Springhill Elementary, 1st Grade Students in all grade levels will have access to the new Clay Extruder. The Clay Extruder will allow students to make their clay projects more three dimensional thereby furthering their learning process. 7. Can You See It Now? I - $3,276 Teachers: Dennis Begg and Robert Anke, Springhill Elementary, 4th Grade The purchase of two LCD projectors will provide a valuable teaching and learning skill. Not only will the teachers use the projectors to present information in a large, clear and readable format, students will also use the projectors to present information to their classes. The projectors make the lesson more interactive and relevant to students in this age of technology. 8. Networked Intervention - $1000 Teacher: Jeannine Pitney, Springhill Elementary, Reading Specialist This grant will extend the licensing and software for the current reading programs to accommodate more work stations and student access. 9. Sharpening Science Fair Skills - $2500 Teachers: Debbie Deitch, 3rd Grade, Diane Wilson, 3rd Grade, and Eileen Fader, 2nd Grade, Springhill Elementary Participation by second- and third-graders in the LASF Science Fairs has been significantly lower than participation by fourth- and fifth-graders. This grant will enable teachers to engage the students in hands-on experimentation across a broad range of topics appropriate to each age group and in accordance with the California standards and benchmarks. 10. Science and Early Literacy - $971 Teachers: Carol Harris, Reading Specialist and Jonathan Winter, Science Specialist, Lafayette Elementary The “Pair-It Books” program allows students to move from reading narrative text to expository text by pairing fiction and non-fiction titles that share the same high-interest subject. This helps students develop reading strategies for reading and learning from non-fiction text.
