Fall 1996 Grant Awards

1. Junior Great Books - $6,700

Teachers: Carol Harris, Lafayette; Jeannine Pitney, Springhill; Linda Picchi, Happy Valley – Reading Specialists

To purchase books, student workbooks, supplies and training for the 3rd grade teachers of 3 schools ready to implement this well accepted, educationally sound program. The program teaches students to read, analyze and critically write about “whole” pieces of literature not just excerpts or digests.

2. Video Production Unit - $2,350

Teacher: Cathy Martinsen, Burton Valley, 4th Grade

To purchase video equipment to be used to train students in speech class to make presentations in a 4th grade pilot program by a qualified teacher at Burton.

3. Mini-lab in Math and Science - $18,000

Teacher: Mike Merrick, Stanley

To purchase 5 Macs and related software and equipment for the mini-lab to be used for all math and science classes at Stanley, designed to do robotic temperature testing science projects and other hands on science programs by an enthusiastic, technology sensitive teacher.

4. Science Curriculum Software - $6,000

Teacher: Aase Schoen, Acalanes

To purchase software and related equipment for Acalanes Science Department regarding both biology and geology investigation and development. Two teachers are volunteering their time to review and investigate to find the very best software for the department.
