Printmaking
Grade 8

Students learn the history of printing, set their own text by hand with individual pieces of type, design and cut a woodblock image to illustrate their text. The text and image are printed on antique printing presses to create broadsides relating to their study of US history. This is a unique opportunity for students to gain an appreciation and understanding of the art of printing and its place in the history of our country.

These students pore over the array of individual pieces of lead type that are distributed in the wood case in front of them. They are selecting specific letters to form the sentences of their text that they will print.

After the lead type is selected, students set up the chase (an iron frame) by locking in the lead type they have put together.

This student is locking in the lead type they have set into the chase. He's using a thing called a quoin key that is put into a quoin which is a small block of metal with springs in it that expands when tightened. When the quoin expands it keeps all the rows of type in one place so they cant move or fall out when you pick up the chase and put it in the press.
